White House Proposes “Food Box” Instead Of Food StampsFebruary 13, 2018
In a move that shocks many across America, the White House administration has announced its plans to discontinue the country’s food stamp program. The administration wants to administer a “food box” program where low-income Americans will receive a box full of $90 worth of “nutritious” foods. The change will affect nearly 38 Million Americans who currently receive $90 or more in food stamps.
Agriculture Secretary, Sonny Perdue made a statement, “USDA America’s Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is homegrown by American farmers and producers. It maintains the same level of food value as SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] participants currently receive, provides states flexibility in administering the program, and is responsible to the taxpayers.”
The fear is how it will affect nearly 80% of food stamp recipients who are in dire need of assistance. Many fear that their livelihood could be in jeopardy.
Essentially, instead of receiving food stamp funds, families will now receive a box of “nutritious”, home grown foods The USDA America’s Harvest Box will contain items such as shelf-stable milk, juice, grains, cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans, canned meat, poultry or fish, canned fruits and vegetables. The box is valued at half of the typical SNAP awards and the remaining amount of their benefits will be added to an electronic card like usual.
The program is slated to save nearly $130 Billion over the next 10 years and replenishes the nutritional value of the food stamp program. The program is also curated to prevent fraud.
